Felt very safe!

I am a relatively spry 68 year old woman. I put the item together in about 30 minutes including time for finding dropped washers. It was easy to get on to the ladder and I never felt so secure once it was on! It does make the ladder top heavy but I was able to handle it by myself. Once it's leaned against the roof, it wasn't difficult to move about. I don't think it would be a problem for a guy at all. I'm thinking about getting it for my son.

Ladder max wobbles

Doesn't fit tight on ladder rungs, so it wobbles. Once you have it against the house or on the roof it's sturdy.

Very easy to install and remove

Exactly what I needed. It makes my ladder a little top heavy but it puts you up and above the roof gutter line very cleanly. Does not damage the shingles in any way. I keep it with my ladders all the time now. Very easy to install and remove.

Haven't been able to use yet, but I have used similar in the past, which keeps the ladder off of the gutters.

Great Product with Minor Alterations

Product easy to assemble and works fine with my hip (slight slope) roof. I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars because the step pieces have sharp edges and while the holes are punch pressed clean, they also have sharp edges. I used the wire brush attachment on my bench grinder to buff them smooth, having only to touch up a little with a metal file. I suggest you do this right out of the box before trying to assemble. You can do the job with a file, just takes longer. It took me about 15 min with the procedure that I used. The manufacturer should do this as you will probably cut a finer if you don't. I did! As others have mentioned, the orange tips are rough on the shingles. I believe this is more pronounced on a hip roof as just the edge is against the shingles. A tip that I will pass on is to use a couple of old golf club head covers that fit down over the tips and protect your roof. I used a couple of rescue club covers and they fit down over the stabilizer ends just fine. I pulled them all the way down by cutting a slot in the sock part of the cover to get past the cross brace. I then wrapped the sock part around the stabilizer and fastened down with cable ties. It made a very neat job and is very functional. I am well pleased with the result. I feel certain that my new gutters will not be damaged by ladders.

Should Have Purchased This Years Ago

That time of the year when our gutters needed cleaning, so I finally had a chance to use this stabilizer. Assembly was fairly easy, about 5 minutes. Easy to attach and remove from ladder, and gives you a very steady feeling while on ladder. Should have gotten this years ago. Only issue, and it is a very small issue, is that the tips that rest on shingles are rather firm and I did notice slight indentations in shingles which will hopefully work out once the sun heats them up a bit. Would buy again.

Just what I always needed
By Daniel J. Stark on June 11, 2010
For years I've had no choice but to rest my extension ladder against the gutters in order to clean them out. This certainly hasn't been very kind to the gutters themselves; but more importantly, I've always feared that the ladder could slip and I would fall to the ground with it. And that hasn't been a very comforting thought.

Last November I hired someone to clean the leaves from the gutters that had accumulated in them when they fell from the trees. I watched him and saw that he had some sort of ladder stabilizer that provided him with real stability. Until then I didn't know such things existed. This spring -- after a horrible windstorm that blew all the maple trees' 'polly noses' into the gutters and clogged them horrendously (particularly after they started to sprout), I went to my local Home Depot where I bought a Werner stabilizer. I attached it to my ladder and gave it a test run. I immediately found out that it was useless for my purposes because the arms were not deep enough to touch the roof, and the ladder still rested on the gutter. I took it back to Home Depot.

I then began my on-line research. I finally boiled it down to two options: (1) the Louisville Ladder Adjustable Ladder Stabilizer; and, (2) the Ladder-Max Stand-off Stabilizer. I liked the adjustability concept of the Louisville Ladder stabilizer, and I also liked the idea of free shipping, but I could not find anything on line that would show me how it attached to the ladder, and/or how it came off the ladder. To me that was of critical importance because I would only be attaching the stabilizer when I needed to use the ladder, and would then remove the stabilizer when I had finished.

Would not do without it
By Kent Keith on February 1, 2011
I am a professional home inspector and would not dream of using my ladder to access roofs without this stabilizer. Before finding this, I used to have my ladder against the roof edge, which can damage the eve shingles or against the gutters with can make the ladder slide to the side. One day after I had my ladder slide and fall, leaving me stranded on a roof top, I knew I had to find a solution. I use this every day and it definitely adds to my confidence. It is well made but one thing the factory should do is that the edges of the steps were very sharp and could cut your hands. The factory should buff the edges before shipping. I took some emery cloth and smoothed them myself. I also wish they would come up with a model that could fold up flat for easier transportation and save space in my truck. I think this is a great product and for the money it is worth not getting injured or worse.

Very solid
By P. Holmes on July 5, 2005
I was terrified working up any ladder over 3 feet in height. Adding this stbilizer really gives the ladder a solid feel and now I feel confident climbing to the top of my 28 foot ladder. I havn't used the stabilizer on a roof yet, just against brick and aluminum siding. Once in position, it does not move at all. It takes seconds to install or take off. The only negative is the relatively narrow span of the product. It just about spans across my smallest windows. I will have to find a different product for my larger windows. The weight can also make it more difficult to maneuver the ladder since it becomes top heavy. Definately a 2 man job. No regrets however, It's allowed me to do things I did not think I was capable of.

Doesn't work for ladders with comfortably deep rungs
By A. Wickman on November 27, 2012
Verified Purchase
Please note in the product descriptions that the ladder's rungs can be no wider than 2 inches. For the most part, that means you have tubular steps and not flat steps. My heavy-duty (300 lb) ladder has flat steps that are 3 1/2 inches deep. These are much more comfortable to stand on than the narrower tubular rungs that this product is designed for.

I figure that I'll need to get another ladder to use this with, because I still need something like this for cleaning leaves from gutters. I'm just disappointed that this isn't described in the spec's and made more prominent. On the Ladder-Max website, which I perused prior to making a purchase. I couldn't find any mention of this. It would be nice if the company made another model that would work with the deeper rungs.

As mentioned by others, the assembly is slightly tricky, but not too bad. The instructions are simple (and should be followed carefully). The "tricky" part is that it would be nice to have a second set of hands when lining up the first few bolts.

works good, but beware of roof
By JAL on April 29, 2010
This stabilizer works good, it allows you to work on dormers and get closer to them than if the ladder was against the gutters, and it saves the gutters. But beware, the hard plastic caps will dig into your asphalt shingles and also damage them if you drag it across. I first put down small rubber backed area rugs from the Depot, either using the window in the dormer or another ladder. Also, it makes the ladder top heavy, so with one person I usually lean the ladder against the gutters temporarily, then add the stabilizer out the dormer window or with another ladder.

A Mechanical Gem

The product worked just as advertised. As an engineer, I appreciate when a product performs as expected. The assembly was a little tedious (two people could have gotten it done in no time), but that was, in my opinion, a minor point. When deployed on a roof, it not only protects any damage to the gutters but stablizes the ladder incredibly well...rock solid. Only negative thing I can think of is that its weight makes deploying the ladder somewhat harder than without it. But the gain is well worth the effort. A real plus from a safety standpoint!!

Will this work on the MT-22 Werner 22-ft Aluminum 300-lb Telescoping Type IA Multi-Position Ladder? Many thanks!

Is it easy to remove and reinstall My ladder use doesn't always require a standoff stabilizer.

A: Yes, very easy to install and remove...I only use on occasion as well.
CTB answered on December 8, 2014

I've seen several photos of ladder max attached to the top rung of an extension ladder. Is that recommended by the manufacturer?

A: Actually, you need two rungs for proper attachment. I attach mine between the second and third from the top.
MrGG answered on June 25, 2014

Will this work on a roof with gutters and a low-slope?

A: Husband says if your roof has any slope at all, it will work fine. Will not work on flat roof. Ladder may have to be leaned into the house farther out from the house on the ground.
